My Summer By Jason

17 Aug

The first thing I did this summer was that my family drove to a family reunion on my mom’s side. We went to Yosemite National Park and saw the tall Sequoias. Then, we went to a hotel and swam quite a bit with my cousins, and the hotel had a pretty good breakfast too. San Francisco with my family was pretty fun because we did a variety of new things. The redwoods, which were equally as big as the sequoias, were cool because we road a gondola into the trees. After a seafood meal in Crescent City, we went home.
Family camp. There were over two hundred people there, mostly friends and some family. I got sick the first day that we were there. Might have gotten something from my brother because he had a bit of a cold the week before, so I was pretty tired the first day.  We were staying in cabins at the camp for a week. For the whole week the activities consisted mostly of swimming and basketball with cousins and friends which was a lot of fun.  After that, we went home.

In August, we drove to a cabin in Washington. We went to the reservoir and went kayaking a lot. I saw some tadpoles and caught a few, then put them back in the water. In some places there were so many tadpoles you couldn’t see the bottom of some of the shallow places in the water. My dad found a lizard and I caught it, took a picture of it and the picture is at the top of the page, then let it go. For a lot of the time, we were sitting around in the cabin by a fire reading which I liked because I got a chance to rest. I cut a path through some woods with my machete. We stayed there for four days. Then we came home.

My week of Summer, by Kilian

17 Jul

For my week of summer, I went to California to a place that my dad camped when he was little – Pinecrest Lake.  My grandparents and cousins were there, too.  There are a lot of pine trees and a very, very cold lake.  You can fish and swim, but I prefer the fishing (did I mention that the lake was cold?)  Also, because my mom was there, we went hiking.  She loves hiking.  My uncle, my dad, my grandpa and I woke up early and caught 13 fish that first day.

Our cabin is not on the lake, but close and we can walk to the water in less than 5 minutes.  After a hard morning fishing, we back and goofed around for the rest of the day.  Well, it is supposed to be a vacation.

The next day we went fishing, again, and caught some more trout.  My grandparents will freeze them, take them home and eat them gradually over the year.  We also went hiking to a place called “Cleo’s baths”.  This was supposed to be a place were the water was warmer and we could swim.  But it wasn’t.   The river was so high it did not slow down in the ‘baths’ and was still COLD!  My cousin, my uncle and I also got lost on the way.  We ended up hiking an hour longer than we were supposed to so we had to trail-blaze on the way back.   Cliffs and vines and rattlesnakes, yikes!

Another thing we did was horseback riding.  My horse was named “Chewbacca” from Star Wars.  My dad’s horse was named “Poncho” – just like my dog’s name.  I really love riding horses because I like animals and you don’t have to walk to get somewhere.

Overall, it was a great time.  I enjoyed the horses and fishing the most.  It was very cool to hang out with my cousins and be spoiled by my grandparents.  The hiking was not so fun (my legs are still all scratched up), but I would do it all again in a heartbeat!

Vacations Are Fun!!!! Genna

16 Jul

Its finally summer!!!! For me that means vacation trips!!! ( Which is my most favorite thing to do during summer.) This year I am going some of the most fun places in California. Some of the places I went to where, Sea World, San Diego Safari Park and Disney Land. But I didn”t go alone I brought my dad, sister and a few other friends. I also took a few pictures because pictures are part of memories.

summer in the sun

10 Jul

The weather has gotten pretty nice here in Portland, but it was amazing in San Diego. The Friday after school got out, I drove down to California with my family. We arrived in San Diego  after a day of driving (the Los Angeles traffic was horrific) on the 29th. We had spent some time in Northern California first. That night we went to the San Diego fair to meet my cousins. We saw the Beach Boys and found that there was everything fried, including butter and there was cheesecake on a stick. The 1st was my birthday, so with some of my mom’s side of the family, I got a stand up paddle boarding lesson at the bay, then spent the rest of the day at the beach. On the 3rd, the first of my 16 cousins got married under an oak tree. It was very sweet and my cousin seemed very happy. The next day was the 4th of July so we went to my aunt’s friends house that live right across from a country club were they shoot off fireworks. It was amazing! I have never been that close to big fireworks in my whole life. On our last  day, the 5th, we went to the beach again. We played beach volleyball then got in the 71 degree water. There were jellyfish and I got stung, but it was ok. Can you think of a better summer in the sun?

what color… -Isabella

2 Jul

Has anyone noticed? There seems to be something wrong with the sky. It hasn’t been its usual uniform gray lately… It’s…what is that color? It’s been so long since I’ve seen it…I think it was called…blue?

And what is that yellow disc up there? It creates an odd sensation when you come in contact with the light it puts out. How odd. I’ve had a conversation with the Gods recently (not the Greek ones…why would you think that?) and they said it was…sunny? Weird. I’ll have to look in to this further.

It’s Finally Summer! – Lilli

25 Jun

I love Summer. Trips to the pool, hikes in the woods – and the best – NO HOMEWORK ‘TILL SEPTEMBER! (Except for this - but this hardly counts as homework) The possibilities for Summer are nearly endless!!!! Even just this week I went on a six-mile hike, hung out in the pool for a couple of hours, dug my shorts out of the bottom of my dresser drawer, and  sprayed my little sister in the face with the hose!!!!!! Plus, I was allowed to stay up late almost every day this week. I don’t know what you have been doing, but whatever it is I know that you should log off the computer, go outside, enjoy the sunshine and take advantage of every precious moment of Summer this and every other week – because you know that Summer won’t last.
